INTERVIEW WITH TOP LABEL CC-TAPIS:
BORN IN FRANCE, DESIGNED IN MILAN, PRODUCED IN NEPAL
Born in France, designed in Milan and produced in Nepal. Behind this striking summery,
there is of course much more to tell. That story of Fabrizio Cantoni, founder and owner of cc-tapis,
withholds even more interesting locations and adventures….
With regard to the textile event of Co van der Horst in The Netherlands,
I was invited to interview Fabrizio about his amazing products. And shortly thereafter
I also had the privilege to visit his brand new showroom in Milan as well.
With this blog I take you with me on my inspiring trip. Enjoy!
Unique childhood in Bormio
Fabrizio Cantoni grew up in the hotel of his parents in Bormio, Italy, where he spent his entire youth. A lovely and happy time, so he recalls, because not only he had the constant attention of his parents, but also the joy of the happy and inspiring hotel guests. These guests were mostly people from abroad, so Fabrizio loved to serve them and meanwhile catch a glimpse of their high society adventures.
Successful career in Rapolla
So it was no surprise that Fabrizio chose to study hotel management. After his graduation he started working as General Manager in the beautiful 5-star Excelsior Palace Hotel in Rapolla, which stands out in spoiling guests to the max.
But because he could not realize the romantic concept of his own childhood in this hotel, although meanwhile he fell in love, got married and children as well, he decided to leave.
Inspiration in New York
As soon as he had left his life as a hotel manager, new ideas and possibilities popped up in his head. Until that day he walked on Melrose Avenue and instantly fell in love with a stunning Tibetan hand-knotted rug hanging in a shop window. His father in law had a rug store in Strasbourgh so it felt like destiny. Fabrizio went back to school to get his Master in Design.
Sketches in Tibet
To witness the making process of these extraordinary rugs and to observe the artisans, the masters of handcraft, Fabrizio went to Nepal. There, in the middle of that fascinating country with its dazzling landscape, Fabrizio taught himself to design patterns and to draw complete collections. He also established some worthy contacts and to make sure his rugs would be produced in a manner that is honest and authentic.
Enterprise in France
With a head full of ambitions and a suitcase full of designs, Fabrizio went to Strasbourgh in France, where he and his wife opened a shop for sales purposes and a design studio. After some years they had to conclude that this location was not effective. He should be in the middle of where great things happen and where he could be noticed by world leading designers. Which of course, for this branche, is ‘design capital’ Milan.
World-famous in Milan
So, in Milan they bought themselves a small place to live and work at the same time. It did not take long before they were ‘discovered’ by Poliform, who was highly impressed by the designs. They immediately placed a huge order, and soon many other big Italian labels followed.
Nowadays great names like Patricia Urquiola are standing in line to design for cc-tapis and several rugs have already been awarded.
Almost a year ago Fabrizio opened a new showroom, just a few blocks away from the famous Piazza del Duomo, where he proudly showed me his rugs and also provided me with the great stories behind them.
When you happen to be in Milan, please do not hesitate to enter the lovely showroom of cc-tapis and be blown away by what you see!
