DUTCH DESIGNER TORD BOONTJE SHINES IN MILAN
WITH NEW DESIGN FOR FOSCARINI
Recently the world’s most beautiful furniture fair took place again: the Salone del Mobile in Milan.
Every spring, leading brands present their latest designs to over 370,000 visitors from around 200 countries.
Foscarini, one of the top Italian brands in our lighting range, also participated in this
with an enormous theatrical décor. And among all those new products we spotted
a spectacular new Dutch design by none other than Tord Boontje.
We visited him for an exclusive interview.
Dutch Design in Italian collections
Tord Boontje graduated from the Design Academy in Eindhoven but settled with his studio in London. Since 1996, Boontje has worked with international companies on various luxury living products such as lighting, furniture and ceramics. His work can be found in various museums.
It is not the first time that Boontje has designed for an Italian brand. He previously worked with Moroso. And now Foscarini has Dutch Design in their collection as well.
Sun as a source of inspiration
It was Patrizia Moroso who introduced Boontje to Foscarini. At that time he was already working on a new design with the sun as a source of inspiration.
“I have always been fascinated by sun, just like shadow by the way. The furniture for Moroso is called Sunny and Shadowy for a reason :-). Sunlight is not only functional but also has a symbolic value. I wanted to do something with that.
Sun-Light of Love
For this design I first collected images of the various ways in which sunlight shines inside. In particular the “sunbursts” in churches I found truly phenomenal and even spiritual. The first sketch was on the table a year ago and together with Foscarini I came to this prototype. Sun-Light of Love is intended as a center piece lighting object and mimics that “sunburst” in a contemporary way.”
